Which one has a nicer interior?

TheHR-Vthe interior is its best attribute, and separately perhapsMazda CX-30’s, a class-leading offering. Looks great, buttons and buttonsClickwith Audi precision, and the materials are of top quality. While most SUVs in this price range have hard plastics, the HR-V has soft leatherette upholstery. This even applies to the mid-range sports gear shown above, which even has cool-looking fabric upholstery. Functionality is also strong with plenty of usable storage space.

TheCorolla Crossit's nothing special. It may have some faux leather on the dashboard too, but it's a relatively simple environment with more hard plastic. Upper trim levels are slightly more elegant with two-tonecolorchoices that make things a little bleak. Ultimately, it's more about the HR-V being unique.

Which has better infotainment technology?

The Corolla Cross gets Toyota's latest infotainment system for 2023 (top right), and while it's faster and prettier than before, there are some usability issues. For example, there are no more physical shortcut keys in the menus to make navigation easier - especially when using Apple CarPlay. Honda's system still has them and is better for it. Now, unlike the Corolla Cross, the HR-V has two infotainment options. The base unit found in the LX and Sport is 7 inches and easier to use, though it still supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The EX-L gets a 9-inch display (pictured above left) with color graphics, customizable home screen and permanently docked menu icons. It's this onelookmore comparable to the Toyota, but both are ultimately easier to use.

Which one has a bigger back seat?

The HR-V (top left) has one of the largest rear seats in its segment, while the Corolla Cross is only average. The specs bear this out, with the HR-V measuring 37.7 inches of legroom compared to the Corolla Cross' 32.0 inches. The Toyota has an extra inch of headroom, but it's not like our heads were on the roof of the Honda. The HR-V is a more cost-effective choice as a family vehicle.

Which one has more capacity and functionality?

The HR-V's cargo volume is larger on paper at 24.4 cubic feet (bottom left image). However, in our real-world tests, the HR-V was disappointing due to its angled tailgate opening, which robs it of functionality. We still managed to fit six suitcases, but it wasn't easy. We did not test the Corolla Cross (picture below right). On paper, it has 24 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat with front-wheel drive and 21.5 cubic feet with all-wheel drive or a hybrid powertrain. The hybrid also loses the spare wheel. If freight transport is important to you, take a look at one of the following competitors:Ford Bronco Sport,VW TaoandKia Seltos.

Which is safer?

None were completecrash testsAfterNHTSAat the time of writing this text. The Insurance Institute for Road Safety awarded both vehicles the highest possible Top Safety Pick+ rating. Only their reflectors received anything other than the highest rating, but they still received the second highest rating of "Acceptable".

As far as safety equipment is concerned, it is equally equipped, except for the HR-V with a rare rearairbags. Both come standard with forward collision warning and automatic failoverbraking, Lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go system and lane centering assist. Blind spot warning is standard on all but the base trim levels. Despite the same features, we generally feel Honda's system is better built.

What ensures better fuel economy?

Welcome to the column of Corolla Cross winners! It gets 31 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 32 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, then 29/32/30 with all-wheel drive. It also offers something that no other brand in this segment offers except Kia: a hybrid drivetrain. TheToyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, shown below on S and XSE trim levels, brings back the unique 45/38/42 with its standard all-wheel drive layout.

HR-Vfuel savingthat's 26/32/28 with FWD and 25/30/27 with AWD. That's not only less than the Corolla Cross, but more than many rivals.

Which is more powerful?

This question is like asking "which of these turtles is faster?" Corolla Cross and HR-V are among the slowestnew vehiclesthey're on sale now, and to make matters worse, they come with continuously variable gears that create a loud, annoying hum. The Toyota has more power at 169 horsepower compared to 158, and 0-60 tests showed it to be about half a second quicker. Both are in the 9 second range, which is again very slow. On the positive side,Hybrida Corolla crossimproves things as it puts out 196 horses and cuts the 0-60 time by two seconds. This combination of power and efficiency makes the Corolla Cross Hybrid the most attractive powertrain of the pair, and is probably the biggest reason to buy a Toyota instead.

Which is better to drive?

The Corolla Cross Hybrid's extra power probably gives it the edge, but when comparing petrol-only versions, we'd rather drive the HR-V. It's impressively refined for this segment, with a firmer, more refined feel to the way it corners and tackles bumps. The steering wheel is slow and you certainly won't have as much fun behind the wheel as you would in a carCivilor evenCR-V. Only the gasoline-powered Corolla Cross is decidedly lackluster to drive, and the Hybrid's "sporty" suspension doesn't make things any more exciting. It also doesn't interfere with the experience.

Which is more convenient?

As mentioned above, the HR-V has a firmer and more refined driving feel. We also like its seating and riding position better, but of course that's a personal preference best discovered through test drives.

Are there versions that stand out more than others?

Take it easy, Corolla Cross Hybrid. Fuel economy and performance are the main reasons to choose it over not only the HR-V, but also other SUVs in its segment. The Hybrid is also exclusive to the Sport trim levels (S, SE and XSE) which include a sport suspension (relative term), LED exterior lighting and sharper looks including a different front end style. XSE is shown below.

When were they last redesigned?

The HR-V has been completely redesigned for 2023, and read about the changes inour first disc review. The Corolla Cross was all-new for 2022 and received an updated infotainment system for 2023. A hybrid also debuted in 2023.

Which is cheaper and offers more equipment?

The prices are almost identical - almost as if the product planners are following what the other company is doing! The HR-V EX-L costs more than the range-topping XLE, but after having owned both, you'll probably agree it should cost more. It also has slightly more standard equipment (aluminum versus steel wheels, for example). The Corolla Cross Hybrid is priced roughly US$2,000 more than a comparable gasoline-only Corolla Cross or HR-V. That seems reasonable, especially when you consider that it includes all-wheel drive and a significant improvement in efficiency.
