Hybrid SUVs and crossovers conquer the market. Such a combination of practicality and performance, particularly in terms of fuel economy, is simply something that cannot be found in other segments of the automotive industry. They are still much more affordable and attractive than battery electric SUVs, and we have no doubt that their sales will continue to grow for years to come.
That's why we decided to bring you our list of the 10 best hybrid SUVs. Some of them are already among the most popular SUVs on the market, while others are future models that have all the qualities to become class leaders.
Ford Escape Hybrid 2023
The current generation of Ford's compact crossover has been around for a few years now, and it's almost time for a mid-cycle refresh. We will see a new design, more features and similar updates. However, we don't expect this update to bring changes to the powertrain, so we can expect two family hybrid versions on offer.
The first features a classic hybrid configuration, based on a 2.5-liter gasoline engine. The combined power is around 200 hp, which is not a spectacular number nowadays. The balance, however, comes in the form of excellent fuel economy, which hovers around 44mpg in the city and 38mpg on the highway.
There is also a plug-in hybrid version with a larger battery and more powerful electric motors for a total output of 221 hp. You can count on 37 miles of all-electric range, as well as 41 mpg in a combined unit.
2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid
The CR-V has always been the gold standard among compact SUVs. It is no wonder, then, that we are eagerly awaiting the new generation, which should debut in 2023 as the Honda CR-V. From what we know so far, the upcoming revision will bring all sorts of new features, and some of them should be hidden too.
The current generation is available with either a petrol or a hybrid configuration. The latter boasts a peak output of 212 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, offering more than decent performance. At the same time, fuel consumption is good. Therefore, it can only improve after redesign.
Along with other typical CR-V qualities such as practicality, functionality and overall quality, the new generation will no doubt also find its place among the class leaders. Additionally, some sources are hinting at more electrification, speculating not just a plug-in hybrid option but an all-electric version as well.
Jeep Wrangler 4x 2023
Even the legendary off-roader is forced to follow the latest trends in the automotive industry. So it also comes with a hybrid powertrain, which is quite capable. It is based on a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two electric motors. The total power is about 375 hp.
In addition to plenty of power, this SUV also has a decent all-electric range of around 21 miles. The MPG-e values, on the other hand, aren't quite as impressive, hovering around 49 MPG-equivalents in combined city/highway driving.
We don't expect big changes for the 2023 model year. Of course, there's always room for new features, but the overall design (including hybrid configuration) remains the same. We can also hear rumors about the all-electric version of the Wrangler, but this has yet to be officially confirmed.
2023 Honda Pilot-Hybrid
This super practical three-row SUV has been around for years, but there has never been an electrified version. The current generation still only comes as a gasoline engine with the good old 3.5 liter V6. However, the new generation is coming for the 2023 model and we have high expectations for this redesign. The test model was captured during testing, albeit in full camouflage.
In addition to a completely new design, the new generation should also bring an electrified version. Specs for the 2023 Honda Pilot Hybrid are still pending and we see two possible scenarios for this SUV. One is an updated version of the system that powered the previous generation Acura MDX, which used three electric motors combined with a V6 engine and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
On the other hand, we could also see a completely new configuration based on a four-cylinder engine. If that happens, we assume the new Pilot would likely come as a plug-in hybrid. Some sources are even speculating about the all-electric version, but we wouldn't take that for granted.
2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
The world's most popular SUV comes from a leader in hybrid technology. It's no wonder, then, that expectations for the RAV4 Hybrid might be a bit higher compared to other models in this class. Still, this model does everything right and is certainly one of the best choices out there, especially if fuel economy is your priority.
The current generation has been around since 2019, so this could be a good time for updates. However, those responsible are still calm, but even if the update happens, we do not expect any changes regarding the powertrain. So a family configuration of 221 hp will continue to provide impressive mpg numbers that can easily reach 45 mpg in the city.
There is also the recently launched RAV4 Prime, a plug-in hybrid version of the SUV. It has a maximum output of 302 hp, as well as an impressive 42 miles of all-electric range. Whichever you choose, you can't go wrong with the RAV4.
2023 Lexus RX450h
The RX is the most popular luxury SUV for a reason. It's stylish, comfortable, well-built and of course also available with hybrid drive. The 2023 Lexus RX 450h is going to look even better than before as it is completely new to the market. The next generation is on the way and should debut next year.
The new generation will switch to the TNGA platform and offer significantly better driving characteristics. In addition, we have a new powertrain that could easily be the same that equips models like the LS 500h. This system combines a 3.5 liter V6 engine with two electric motors for a total output of 354 hp.
Other forms of electrification are also possible. We can easily see a plug-in hybrid setup, while the all-electric version doesn't seem likely to our ears. We all know that Toyota management is not very ambitious when it comes to all-electric vehicles and that they are looking for alternatives.
BMW X5 2023
The popular mid-size SUV has been available with a hybrid unit for some time now and that won't change with the 2023 BMW X5. It continues with the same plug-in hybrid configuration, combining a 3.0-liter turbo in-line six-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a total output of 389 hp. That's enough for a 0-60 sprint in just 5.3 seconds. Maximum all-electric range is 30 miles.
On the other hand, the rest of the SUV will present notable changes. The 2023 model year is about to be refreshed and we expect new features inside and out. Expect a new front panel along with other typical mid-cycle upgrades. The interior should also get some updates.
We're also hearing rumors of the all-electric version, but that doesn't sound particularly likely to our ears, especially considering the new iX series of all-electric models.
2023 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid
The 2023 model year should be completely new. The current generation has been around since 2014 and such a scenario makes perfect sense, even if the current model is still competitive in many ways.
However, the hybrid version needs updates. Despite plenty of power and excellent performance, it lacks refinement, particularly when switching between different driving modes. That's why we have high expectations for the 2023 Volvo XC90 T8. Of course, it should also have more power and better fuel consumption.
Of course, the new generation should also bring improvements in other aspects, starting with the shooting quality, technology, design, etc. We also expect the new XC90 to have a very advanced semi-autonomous driving system.
Hyundai Tucson Hybrid 2023
The new Tucson has just debuted as a 2022 model, and we're pretty sure there won't be any major changes in its second year of production. This means that we have well-known driving options, including two hybrid variants.
The former features a standard hybrid configuration, combining a 1.6-liter four-liter turbo engine with an electric motor for a total output of 226 hp. Driving dynamics are very good, while we also like the fuel economy, which totals around 37mpg
On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid comes with a more powerful 90 hp electric motor, while the 1.6 turbo four remains the same. The total power increases to 261 hp and the overall performance is quite impressive. Along with solid acceleration, you can also expect an all-electric range of 32 miles. Average fuel economy should be around 35 mpg combined.
2023 Mazda CX-7
The CX-7 nameplate is making a comeback, and we have high expectations for it. As you can imagine, the new 2023 Mazda CX-7 will be placed between the twoCX-5ECX-9models, but if the latest reports are to be trusted, it won't have much in common with these two SUVs.
Firstly, the new CX-7 will be based on a completely different platform. The current generations of Mazda SUVs will soon be replaced and will receive a new RWD platform. On the other hand, the 2023 Mazda CX-7 will take a slightly different approach. Rather than chasing performance, it will focus more on fuel economy and hybrid technology, something Mazda has so far missed.
That means it will likely borrow technology from Toyota. It will run on the TNGA platform and use Toyota's well-known and proven class-leading hybrid configuration, based on a 2.5-liter engine and equipped with two electric motors. We're of course talking about the same configuration that powers the RAV, which tops out at 221hp and boasts some pretty impressive mpg numbers.
Of course, that won't be the only quality of this upcoming model. We also have the typical Mazda quality in other areas, starting with the excellent interior design, many technical features, direct and responsive steering, attractive exterior, etc. All of this, combined with advanced hybrid technology, should bring the CX-7 to market immediately and we firmly believe it could easily become the best hybrid SUV in its class.
The all-new 2023 Mazda CX-7 is expected to launch in late 2022. We estimate the starting price at around $30,000.
