When Muhammad A. (Rumee) Ali was appointed Country Head of ANZ Grindlays Bank Bangladesh in 1997, he probably would have been looking for another Bangladeshi to run a global company, be it domestic or international.
Rather, the coveted top positions in multinational corporations were reserved for foreigners.
But now more than 50 Bangladeshis run multinational companies at home and abroad.
They work in leadership positions at multinational companies in various industries, including banking, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, consumer goods, and apparel.
Some of the most famous names are Imran Khan, Dr. Omar Ishrak, Lumat Ahmed, Abrar Anwar, Ata Safdar and A (Rumee) Ali.
The number of Bangladeshis in high-level positions in multinational companies has started to grow over the past year. This year Dr. Intel CEO Omar Yasir Azman has been appointed as CEO of Grameenphone and Mahtab Uddin Ahmed has been appointed to the board of Ncell Axiata Limited Nepal.
"Everyone in those roles has a story to tell, and the stories have something in common," said Mamun Rashid, who has served as managing director of Citibank NA Bangladesh for nine and a half years since 2001.
He said that multinationals always appoint local CEOs to facilitate local operations considering various aspects such as: B. A better understanding of the company's objectives, mission and vision; global picture; local culture and consumer tastes; reputation and emerging risk; and relationship with regulators.
The ability to serve the business is the first trait multinationals look for when hiring CEOs, he said.
“In an increasingly globalized world, thinking outside the box, respecting the company's core values, emerging managerial skills, reputation, the ability to bring out the best in team members and the drive for success are necessary. to run a multinational company,” he added.
In recent years, multinational companies have sent their officials abroad to help them gain experience abroad and are now offering them management positions in Bangladesh with a smart package, said Mamun, also a managing partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
He said that more Bangladeshis would be appointed to leadership positions in the coming days.
Berger Paints Bangladesh has a long history of appointing local people to leadership positions, said Rupali Chowdhury, the company's chief executive since 2008.
She said they have a number of bright people in the pipeline to run the company. She joined Berger in 1990 as a planning manager and has held various management positions in various departments including marketing, sales, and supply chain and systems.
"I have cross-departmental experience at this company," he adds.
Citing American management expert Jack Welch, he said that to establish a multinational company in a new country, a foreigner must lead it for up to three years and during that time must develop a local leader to better localize the company.
Local officials know best the tastes of local customers and are also best acquainted with local culture, laws and regulators, he added.
Syed Ershad Ahmed, country manager and CEO of Expeditors Bangladesh, said most multinationals appoint local people to top positions, with the exception of a few, such as Chevron.
“Our young professionals are brilliant. They have the ability to run multinational companies,” said Ershad, also president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh.
dr. Lafifa Jamal, a professor of robotics and mechatronics at Dhaka University, said graduates of the university's college of engineering and computer science work at all the tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Uber and LinkedIn.
She said IT jobs were once dominated by students from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), but students from Dhaka University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Chittagong University and other universities engineering are now doing better too.
Most tech companies have recruitment centers in India, but Bangladeshi students do better abroad because they don't have better opportunities here, he added.
In April 1997, A (Rumee) Ali became Country Director of ANZ Grindlays Bank Bangladesh which merged into Standard Chartered Bangladesh in 2002. He served Standard Chartered Bangladesh as CEO for more than two years.
In 2002, Ata Safdar was appointed Managing Director of Reckitt Benckiser Bangladesh. He held this position for five years. He currently serves the company as a Senior Vice President in Singapore.
Golam Mainuddin has been the Chairman of British American Tobacco Bangladesh since August 2008.
Kamran Bakr has been an independent director of Robi since February this year. He led Unilever Bangladesh from 2012 to 2017 as Chairman and CEO and Unilever Nepal as CEO from 2007 to 2011.
Shehzad Munim has been Managing Director of British American Tobacco Bangladesh since October 2013.
Syed Mohammad Kamal has been the country manager for Mastercard Bangladesh since 2013. Before joining Mastercard, he held management positions at Berger Paints Bangladesh, Western Union, and SSL Wireless.
In 2016, Mahtab Uddin Ahmed was appointed as Robi's first CEO and CEO of Bangladesh. He joined the company in 2010.
Abrar Anwar has been appointed Managing Director and CEO of Standard
Chartered Bank Malaysia in 2017. Prior to that, he was CEO of the bank's operations in Bangladesh for two years.
In November 2017, Naser Ezaz Bijoy was appointed as the CEO of Standard Chartered Bangladesh. Previously, he was General Manager of the bank and Head of Corporate and Institutional Clients.
Unilever Bangladesh has appointed Zaved Akhtar as CEO and Managing Director. His appointment takes effect July 1. Zaved will also join Unilever's leadership team in South Asia. He is currently Vice President of Digital Growth and Transformation, South Asia, in India.
Tahmina Ahmed has been appointed additional Managing Director of Seven Rings Cement. Previously, she had been on the board since 2007.
Muin Uddin Mazumder has been the CEO of Sanofi Bangladesh since 2017. He joined the company in 1995.
Lumat Ahmed has been appointed category director of sourcing for French clothing brand Lacoste this year. Prior to that, he worked for various clothing brands in various positions both nationally and internationally.
Imran Khan was Chief Strategy Officer for American multinational technology company Snapchat from 2015 to 2018. In November 2018, he became Co-Founder and CEO of Verishop, a live shopping app to provide a new way to discover products, connect with experts and brands on a social commerce platform.
Bangladeshi-born businessman Dr. Omar Ishrak became Intel's chairman of the board of directors in May 2020. He will serve on the board for seven years.
Bangladesh in clothing leadership
In July 2019, Ziaur Rahman was appointed H&M's first Country Regional Manager for Bangladesh, Pakistan and Ethiopia. Previously, he had 20 years of experience in the garment industry.
He began his career as a trader with the Allana Group in June 1996.
Shwapna Bhowmick is Country Manager for Bangladesh and Myanmar at Marks and Spencer. Prior to that, she worked for global brands like Next and Walmart before joining Marks and Spencer in 2006 as a salesperson.
Shafiur Rahman has been the country manager for G-Star Raw since July 2013. He began his career as a product developer at Youngone Corporation in March 2003.
Arif Razzaque has been Regional Marketing Director at Kiabi International Supply Services Bangladesh since November 2017. Previously, he was Country Manager at Sears Holdings Global Sourcing and Sourcing Center Manager at Carrefour Global Sourcing Bangladesh.
