What is a Renaissance Star test??

Renaissance Star is a suite of tests consisting of Renaissance Star Early Literacy®, Renaissance Star Reading®, Renaissance Star Math®, and Renaissance Star Spanish®. Renaissance Star tests are used to provide a comprehensive understanding and overview of a student's progress, achievement, and growth throughout the year. Although the Renaissance Star test was not designed for this purpose, some schools use Renaissance Star reading scores and Renaissance Star math scores as part of their GATE or Gifted and Talented criteria.

What types of Renaissance Star tests are there?

There are 3 Renaissance Star tests:early literacy, reading, ymathematics. As an adaptive test, the questions that appear on the tests depend on how well a child performs on the previous questions.

How are the Renaissance Star tests administered?

Renaissance Star tests are administered using computer adaptive tests that are administered online and intuitively. This means that the difficulty of the question will be adjusted based on what the student gets right and what they don't. If a student answers a question correctly, the test is scaled to ask a more difficult question next; If a student answers incorrectly, the difficulty of the next question decreases. Each student receives a personalized testing experience that can assess whether the student is at, above, or below class level in specific areas.

Some quick facts about Renaissance Star testing

How long do the tests last? Each test takes approximately 20 minutes, although some students may need more time
How are the tests done?Assignments are completed on a single computer, Chromebook, iPad, or tablet at least 7 inches in size.
How are the questions structured? All questions are multiple choice with 3-4 possible answers per question
How are test results reported?Scores are calculated at the end of the test and reported to the student's teacher, and scores are assessed by class and grade level at the school or district level.

How is the Renaissance Star test used?

Star ratings help teachers assess each student's strengths and weaknesses and can allow them to develop personalized instruction based on their students' results. You can also identify areas that need improvement, revision, or enrichment for students, as well as monitor growth and performance against state standards and state tests. Star ratings can also be used to determine a student's proficiency level in reading and mathematics. A student's score on the Renaissance Star Reading and Renaissance Star Math tests helps determine if a child qualifies for acceptance into the Accelerated Reader™ and Accelerated Math™ programs. The Early Literacy Assessment helps educators monitor your child's growth and progress in becoming an independent reader. Renaissance Star's Spanish reading assessments help bilingual and bilingual students assess reading and possibly math.

How do you find the scores for Renaissance Star Reading and Renaissance Star Math?

Renaissance Star Reading and Renaissance Star Math scores are Scaled Scores (SS). Scoring is based on two factors: 1) the difficulty of the questions and 2) the number of correct answers the child gave. Because the test is an adaptive test, some students are given less difficult questions based on how they answered previous test questions. The SS for reading and math ranges from 0 to 1400, while the SS for early literacy ranges from 300 to 900. The SS addresses reading and math skills for each grade level. For example:

  • An SS reading of 0-500 corresponds to grades 1-5
  • An SS reading of 500-900 corresponds to grades 6-8

Scaled results are useful for comparing your child's performance over time and across grade levels.
